Local SEO Basel: 10 Steps to More Customers from Google Maps

Ten practical steps for local SEO in Basel, from the Google Business Profile and reviews to schema and measuring calls from Google Maps.

Local SEO Basel: 10 Steps to More Customers from Google Maps

Local SEO Basel is what decides whether your business shows up for searches such as "electrician Basel" or "physiotherapy near me" in the top of Google Maps. For local searches, Google usually highlights only three listings on the map. Whoever is there gets a large share of the calls, direction requests and website visits. The useful part: ten clear steps let a small business compete where big chains otherwise dominate.

How Google sorts local results

Google itself names three main factors for local ranking: relevance (does your listing match the search?), distance (how far is your location from the person searching?) and prominence (how well known and trusted is the business online?). You cannot change the distance. You can change relevance and prominence. The official guidance is in Google's help page on local ranking.

Local SEO Basel in 10 steps

1. Choose the searches people actually type

Write down how customers really search: the service plus the place, for example "plumber Basel", "hairdresser Kleinbasel" or "accountant Gundeldingen". Include neighbourhoods such as St. Johann, Bachletten and Matthäus, and the surrounding towns: Riehen, Allschwil, Binningen, Muttenz, Pratteln. Google's suggestions and the "People also ask" box give you more ideas.

2. Create and verify the Google Business Profile

The Google Business Profile is the single strongest lever. Pay attention to:

  • Primary category: the most important decision. Be specific. "Electrician" beats "contractor".
  • Additional categories for the other services you actually offer.
  • Description: up to 750 characters, written naturally, with services and place.
  • Services and products with short descriptions and prices where that makes sense.
  • Opening hours, including special hours, for example during Fasnacht or public holidays.
  • Service area: if customers do not visit you, hide the address and define the area you cover.

3. Keep the business details identical everywhere

Name, address and phone number must match exactly on the website, the Google profile and every directory. "Musterstrasse 12" in one place and "Musterstr. 12" in another is enough to confuse a search engine. Pick one spelling and use only that.

4. List the business in Swiss directories

Keep the listing current on local.ch and search.ch, and also on Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Apple is easy to forget, even though Apple Maps is installed on every iPhone. Industry directories and trade associations are worth adding too.

5. Give each important service its own page

Instead of listing every service on one page, give each important service its own URL, with the place in the title and the main heading. For example: "Bathroom renovation in Basel: planning and installation". Do not publish dozens of near-identical pages for every municipality. Google treats those as low quality.

6. Add structured data

The LocalBusiness schema type tells search engines and AI assistants, in a machine-readable way, who you are, where you are and when you are open:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "Example Electric GmbH",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "Musterstrasse 12",
    "postalCode": "4056",
    "addressLocality": "Basel",
    "addressCountry": "CH"
  },
  "telephone": "+41 61 000 00 00",
  "url": "https://www.example-electric.ch"
}

Check the result with Google's Rich Results Test.

7. Ask for reviews on purpose

Reviews carry a lot of the prominence signal. Ask happy customers right after the job, with a direct link or a QR code on the invoice and the business card. Reply to every review, including the critical ones, in a factual and friendly way. Bought or fake reviews break Google's policies and can also conflict with Swiss unfair-competition law (UWG).

8. Publish local content and real photos

Upload real photos of the team, the premises and finished jobs. Skip stock photos. Use the posts feature on the Google profile for offers and news. On the website, regional references work especially well: "New electrical installation in an old building in the Gundeli" is more relevant to a Basel customer than a generic paragraph.

9. Earn local mentions and links

Links and mentions from local websites strengthen prominence: the trade association, clubs you support, partner businesses, suppliers, regional media. A sponsorship line on a neighbourhood association site is often worth more for local search than a link from a random site you paid for.

10. Measure the results

The Google Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks. Google Search Console shows which queries your site appears for. Remember that local rankings depend on where the person is searching from. A search in Kleinbasel does not return the same map as a search in Binningen.

A Basel-specific point: the border

Basel sits where three countries meet. If you also want customers from Lörrach, Weil am Rhein or Saint-Louis, say so in the service area, on the website, and if needed with French content. The reverse is true too: if you can only serve customers in Switzerland, say that clearly so you do not collect the wrong enquiries. And if you deliberately target customers in the EU, check whether the GDPR applies on top of Swiss law.

Local search and AI answers

The same foundations are what make ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews recommend your business: consistent company details, real reviews, structured data and clear answers to the questions customers actually ask. Doing local search properly is also the base for being mentioned by an AI assistant.

Conclusion

Local SEO Basel is upkeep, not a one-off project. A complete Google Business Profile, identical business details, a steady flow of reviews and strong service pages produce the biggest effect. If you would rather not do the setup yourself, my local SEO setup for Basel is a fixed CHF 890 for WordPress sites, including the Business Profile, RankMath and schema. Rank Math exists only for WordPress. For another CMS or a custom-built site, the price is on request after I have looked at the system.

Frequently asked questions

What does local SEO in Basel cost?

Doing it yourself costs mostly time. A professional setup with me is a fixed CHF 890 for WordPress sites. For another CMS or custom code, the price is on request. Ongoing care with a monthly report starts at CHF 149 per month. Agencies often charge several hundred francs a month for the same kind of care.

How long until Google Maps rankings improve?

First improvements often show within a few weeks, once the profile is complete and verified. Stable top positions for competitive terms usually take three to six months.

Do I need an address in Basel to rank there?

For searches inside the city, a nearby location is a real advantage, because distance to the searcher counts. A service area on its own does not improve the map ranking. A strong service page can still appear in the regular results for Basel.

Can I add more than one location?

Yes. One profile per real location that has staff or signage. Virtual offices and letterbox addresses are not allowed under Google's guidelines and often get the profile suspended.
